What is a wisdom tooth?
Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of permanent molars most people get in their late teens or early twenties. The wisdom tooth gets its name from erupting at a more mature age, following the saying “with age comes wisdom.”
Why do we have wisdom teeth?
This is a common question considering most people have their wisdom teeth extracted and some people are even congenitally missing one or more wisdom tooth in the first place. Wisdom teeth exist because our earliest ancestors survived on a coarse diet of raw meat, nuts, roots, plants, etc. Since these people did not have the tools to conveniently cut, chop, bake, and boil their food, a broad jaw with several strong molars was required to eat. This larger jaw could easily accommodate the third set of molars that were a huge asset to chewing their rough diet.
Over time, the human jaw evolved, becoming much smaller in size as today’s food preparation allows us to consume food with far less effort from our jaws and teeth. The smaller jawbone of the modern human cannot always fit all 32 teeth properly, resulting in the common practice of having your wisdom teeth extracted.
How do I know if my Wisdom Teeth need to be removed?
The best way to know if your wisdom teeth are correctly positioned in your mouth or if they are impacted, is to come in to Dorosti Family Dental for a check-up. We’ll be happy to answer any additional questions you have at that time.

You don’t have to look far online to find “alternative” options for do-it-yourself dentistry. From videos to whiten your teeth at home with homemade mixtures, fill your own cavities, straighten your teeth or pull your own teeth, there are endless so-called “money- saving solutions” that promise to fix your smile. The truth is that these trends are not only dangerous, but they can result in long-term damage.
Eating healthier doesn’t mean changing your entire eating pattern overnight. Small changes, made over time, can add up. For National Nutrition Month® 2017, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics urges everyone to start small – one forkful at a time, and “Put Your Best Fork Forward.”
